Awesome. What's new about these that sets them apart from other gloves? The scales protecting the finger joints look ok, but could be a little longer I think. I used some hockey gloves a while back that were near perfect in that regard.

They combine all the best features of the best lacrosse gloves and add thicker plastic plates inside, plus edge-of-finger protection at top and bottom, rolled-end thumb, and they are cheap!

Ah, there's the rub ... any idea where they are being made?

Ah, I'm going to guess these are UK only? Unless "Red Dragon" things get stocked in the US somewhere?

Hi All,

Thanks for the post Matt.

In answer to the questions asked: a)They are manufactured in China by a high-end sports equipment factory that manufactures for major brands b) They will be available globally via anybody already retailing Rawlings Sparring swords.

Also thanks for hitting on the fact that they are cheap Matt :D

They are very much aimed at being the best available option in this price bracket. They are better than the Brine Supercrosse which used to retail at over £100.

I would urge people not to expect miracles from them. They are made to a price and are predominantly aimed at being the best option for beginners or people on a budget.

Our aim was to provide an off-the-shelf product that offers a better level of protection than that currently available with a target price of £50 or less.

Upgrades are planned but with each upgrade comes a price increase.

We have no desire to create any glove that retails for more than £100 and will be working to provide the best possible protection for this price.

Looks like a good option for sword and buckler.

Exactly what I thought ... great for side sword and perhaps Sabre also. Everything is made in China these days so it certainly does not have to mean cheap in quality terms ... many companies are having equipment made out of the same factories off the same tooling and the gear just gets badged for different brands. I look forward to hearing reviews and wish the product well.

Can't wait to see a pair.

Dangermouse - Have you ever thought of having someone hawking your kit (or at least having bits to show) at SWASH? the dates for it this year would tie in well for this release.

They look really nice! I'm sure they will dominate the budget section of the market.

Two things that worry me, though:

1) It looks like there is a gap on the outside of the base of the little finger. This is a very fragile bone and a place that is not at all unlikely to hit, especially with a sabre. In fact, the one time I broke a finger from a direct hit with a sword it was in exactly that spot.

2) Another rather common target area for us sabreurs is the inside of the wrist. The cuff looks a bit open, especially right below the palm. This is a common failing of most gloves (even high-end stuff like Black Lance) but I still thought I might mention it.

Really looking forward to trying these in Florence!

You could sponsor a fighter and deck him out in your kit. Could be good advertisement potential.

I'll second that! Would be really good to see the HEMA Shop at SWASH and don't you stock the Royal Armouries shop anyway?

I like the idea but because we supply directly into the shop there they are a little funny about us trading on site. Might be able to work something out with them selling the kit for the SWASH weekend though...

All feedback is always appreciated :D These are very much a first attempt and will be improved with feedback. These suggestions can indeed be implemented, but maybe on the next model up, to keep the cost of the basic model to a minimum.

Nice idea in principle, but to my mind SWASH is a lot less tournament focused than say Fightcamp, with more people interested in the workshops and the lectures. you'd get better value at the latter I think

I've seen people with new books out or whatever make arrangements just to have a couple of copies out where you register for people to peruse. If trading didn't work you might well be able to persuade the organizers just to let you be there for the day with a table, one set of everything and some business cards to demo kit and get the orders via internet.
