Silver fittings on smallswords

Postby Thearos » 29 Mar 2014 05:22

Do I understand correctly, that lots of English smallswords have the guard, knucklebow, and pommel (and rings) made out of solid silver ? Is there any advantage at all to this, or is it all for show ?

Show. Deadly dandy jewelry.

When I was a fighting-man, the kettle-drums they beat,
The people scattered gold-dust before my horses feet;
But now I am a great king, the people hound my track
With poison in my wine-cup, and daggers at my back.

Cost, I presume. I don't imagine they're solid silver on places that need to be protective - just plated.

They were solid silver hilts, not plated. It is not uncommon to see these either broken or deformed (e.g., bent or missing quillon or knuckle guard).

ADDED: Well, re-reading the section from Aylward it seems some were plated, but most I have seen were solid silver with hallmarks.

I wondered if solid silver was up to the rigours of swordfighting (especially against cuts)
