I think a lot of the headgear with the large square openings in the front are NOT meant to be masks for the sword, but for the bayonet, because a lot of swordf blades could easily pass through those holes. At one time, I had the corresponding jacket, which covered both sides of the body, but had short sleeves.

Yes, I think you are correct.
Equally, a lot of the antique 'left handed sabre fencing gloves' being sold out there are actually for bayonet fencing, where a padded glove was worn on the left hand and a normal glove on the right.
