Checking the Heat Treat by Sound?

Postby Weedus » 18 Jan 2017 05:02

Im currently reading a realy good german Manual from 1801 for Smallsword and it starts with total beginner your he gives Instructions on how a proper Smallsword should look and how long it shall be and such things.And he said you shall knock against the Sword with a Spoon or some other little Metal tool and then listen to the Sound...when it would not be proper heat treated in part of the Blade you would be able to hear that...he says it must sound equal

Anyone heard of that before ?

Yes; if it is made well, it should ring more like a tuning fork.

When I was a fighting-man, the kettle-drums they beat,
The people scattered gold-dust before my horses feet;
But now I am a great king, the people hound my track
With poison in my wine-cup, and daggers at my back.

Its nice to get practical advice like that in a primary source! That sort of information is available for my period, but you have to read other genres of sources, not just fencing manuals, and digest them.
how could anyone resist becoming
part of what I thought you were?
