I know that doctorates in Finland come with a special hat and a special sword ... -and-sword

The sword is a court sword or a smallsword. I have held one. I see that the Swedes do the same ... -academia/

Chevalier d'Auvergne make working swords, as their (rather difficult to use) website shows:

(click on "armes officielles")-- smallswords (or parade swords) and lots of sabres.
