Eg. 3149. 'GENTIL MILICIA', an Italian treatise on chivalry, by Gentile
d'Odoardo deli Maynardi d'Ascholo (Ascoli Piceno), dedicated to Cecho
d'Arcone deli Arconi di Roma. Contents:-
(1) Prologue, with dedication, by the author who is otherwise unknown
and is not mentioned by G. Cantalamessa Carboni in his Memorie intorno i
Letterati ... di Ascoli, 1830. Cecho d'Arcone was probably a relative of
Antonio Arcone, Bishop of Ascoli 1387-1390 and 1399-1405 (C. Eubel,
Hierarchia Catholica, i, p. 111), who was of Roman origin (see Saggio delle cose
Ascolane, by 'un abate Ascolano, 1766', p. 229, and also R. Flower, 'An
Italian Treatise on Chivalry', Brit. Mus. Quart., xiii, 1938-1939, pp. 50-52).
ff. 1-2;-(2) Book I, on the seven degrees of friendship ranged under the seven
planets (cf. Ramon Lull's arrangement of his Libre del Orde d'Cavayleria,
Barcelona, 1879, copied by Joanot Martorell and Martí Joan de Gualba in
Tirant lo Blanch, Barcelona, 1924), ff. 2-13;-(3) Book II, divided into eight
tractates, on the allegorical interpretation of the ceremonies and incidents of
knighthood. On f. 66 is mentioned a battle which took place in Nov. 1348
during the war between Ascoli and Fermo, the troops of the former being
commanded by Malatesta II and Galeotto di Rimini and of the latter by
Gentile da Mogliano (Saggio delle cose Ascolane, p. 279). ff. I3-79b;-(4)
Book iv (sic), on nobility. ff. 8o-88b.
The work consists mainly of excerpts from (among others) classical authors
and Dante, Cino da Pistoria, Giovanni de Vergilio, Onesto da Bologna and
Giovanni Villani.
Vellum; ff. 89. 290 mm. x 210 mm. Late XIV cent. Gatherings of 10 leaves,
with signatures. Written in bastard hand in double columns, with decorated
initials in blue, red and purple and illustrated with line drawings in roundels
viz.:-(i) the author presenting the book to his patron. f. 1;-(ii) the seven
planets. ff. 2, 4, 6, 7, 9, 10b, 11b (the series differs widely from the usual
ones);-(iii) a king. f. 80;-(iv) a bishop. f. 13;-(v) a judge. f. 43b;-(vi)
Cupid. f. 45b;- (vii) knights. ff. 16, 26, 47, 62b, and 69b. Directions to the
illustrator occur passim and the MS. has been carefully corrected in a con-
temporary hand. The MS. appears to be unique. Limp vellum contemporarv
binding.
