Fairbairn seems to like that "matchbox" method; I think it is in all three of his works. I'm taking it to mean these are much sturdier than modern match boxes? I could be wrong but unless it was quite full I don't think modern ones would do much except turn a solid fist into something with give.

Old matches were made of very thin wood. Even when cardboard became the norm brass covers were commonly to slip over the box to stop it being squashed

Hm. I wonder how good of a fist load that would make. Brass, sure, maybe if it was strong. Then again, if you're doing multiple punches in succession the give probably doesn't matter so much.
