There is a ton of interesting information in these naval 'Instructions', even down to how to clean muskets and rifles and how to conduct yourself during boarding actions.

Here is the front page from the start of the Cutlass Exercise - note the engaging guard which is shown in lots of drawings and photos from the time, right up to about 1900, and which is essentially the same as Waite's engaging guard:



Also note the 6 cut circles placed over the head, torso and lead knee (actually reduced to only 4 cuts in this cutlass exercise).

This is quite an interesting treatise, I'm going to have to read through it a few times to make sure I absorb all this information. Do you still believe that Angelo was the author, or do think it might have been written by someone else?

I believe this to be Henry Charles Angelo's later simplified system (from the 1830's?), with four cuts, two thrusts and three guards. His earlier (1812ish) cutlass system was essentially the same as the slightly later infantry sword exercise, I believe, and therefore more 'complicated' - or at least with more cuts, thrusts and parries.
