What did the Marxbrüder teach?

Postby TheDude » 18 Nov 2007 20:19

What exactly do we know with regards to what was taught by the Marxbrüder? I know from the various engravings and anecdotes lying around that the following were taught:

longsword
zweihander
rapier
dussack
spear
quarter staff
grosse messer

How much more do we know and more importantly what was taught? I know this is a general question I am curious to pick your brains.

My second question is how much of this would be taught for example to a soldier looking to qualify as doppelsoldner etc? Would a civilian train in all the weapons, combinations or the ones they wanted? Do we have any idea?

My questions are purely directed at the Marxbrüder, not the system or masters in general. I hope that makes sense :-)

Last question is simply, how would you describe the overall system of the Marxbrüder?

The overall system of the Marxbrüder is Harpo does the music, Chico does the physical funnies and Groucho is the verbally funny one.

No-one remembers Zeppo.

(my apologies)

hi...

well if you take the fencing book of peter falkner you, who was captain of the marx brüder for 3 years (not in a row), then you will find,

longsword,
dagger,
messer,
horseback,
poleweapons (long staff),
halmbarts in armour,
spikeshield and clubs (tournament rules of the rheinland)

well... I guess these are the teached weapons.

Zeppo was used as the straight-man or sometimes the romantic lead, though sometimes this role was filled by a non-Marx brother.

Harpo also did prop comedy, as well as the music, of course.
