Sorry for chiming in so late.

I think the most important thing is to keep blade contact - to stay in the bind.
This way you feel what your opponent does (fühlen) and you can react to it faster.
If you step aside and loose the bind you leave him open to do whatever he wants - not a good thing.

To me the bind is essential in the Duplieren. And yes - I also cross my hands and cut from the inside (long edge) or from the outside (short edge) - movement stays the same.
