The Art of Combat : A German Martial Arts Treatise of 1570 (Hardcover)
by Joachim Meyer, Jeffrey L. Forgeng (Translator)

While not out yet in the US I ordered my copy form Amazon UK. Has anyone read through it? If so what do you think?

Angel

I've seen it and spent some time in it and it is excelent, i have been working from Meyer's longsword on sceilhau.org for a couple year's and had the dagger stuff for about 2 year's, the complete book though put's a new context to it alot of it, thing's are explained in the device section of the longsword that are vague in the scheilhau text without the device's after the poem.

The rapier shed's light on why he doesn't teach thrusting in the longsword and there are soem good drill's in the dusack section that translate to Longsword, it is a fantastic book.

So Jeff, you'd reccomend it?

I've been looking at it for a while. And have been curious as to whether it's worth getting.

Meyer is very, very deep. He offers more concrete, detailed instruction in how to do things than any other manual I've looked at. It's a real "how to" book. I have been spending most of my time with it. I have pulled off some of the devices in free play both in the sword and the dagger. They worked as advertised.

the "problem" with meyer is, that his treatise is more a sport-fencing book, at least for the long sword section. he often ignore the lower openings just for aiming to the opponents head.

I like the staff and longstaff parts in the meyer manuals!

and again.... LEARN GERMAN!!!! then you don't need translations! :D

Hehe don't forget that at least 1/4 is scandinavian!

We "gave" it to the english, when we went over there and had some fun in the 10 century! :)

Best wishes

But back to the topic!

It is a great book and worth the money! And the illustration are certainly worth a closer look!

Best wishes

Yep well we moved our interests to north germany and tried our luch there until the Hansa finally took over in the 13th century! We should never have given up on Lübeck, look at all the trouble that gave us!

But then again we won the final battle against the germans in 1992 in sweden (2-0)

Best wishes
